What does the regulation say?
The fight against waste is a priority reinforced by law no. 2020-105 of February 10, 2020 relating to the fight against waste and the circular economy (AGEC).
Regarding food waste, all stages of the food chain, production, processing, distribution and consumption, contribute to losses and waste.
The AGEC law sets the objective of reducing food waste by 50% compared to its 2015 level by 2025 in the areas of food distribution and institutional catering, and by 2030 in the areas of consumption, production, processing and commercial catering.
The national call for projects under the National Food Plan (PNA), launched annually by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and supported by ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), aims to develop unifying, scalable, or exemplary projects. This call supports projects related to supplying institutional catering services, reducing food waste, and combating food insecurity. In 2021, ADEME published a study on the 12 main sectors of activity, revealing that, on average, unsold food represents more than €4 billion in market value.
